School launches three new programs, plus Evening and Weekend format

[June 16, 2008] – The Art Institute of Dallas is pleased to announce the launch of three new degree programs, beginning in the Summer Quarter, which starts on July 14, 2008. The school will now offer a bachelor’s degree program in Culinary Management, as well as associate’s degree programs in Photography and Baking & Pastry.

The Summer Quarter at The Art Institute of Dallas will also see the launch of comprehensive, career-focused bachelor’s and associate’s degree programs in an Evening and Weekend format. The programs are designed to provide working adults who cannot attend class during traditional business hours the opportunity to complete their education through a combination of evening, weekend, and online courses.

The Art Institute of Dallas will offer bachelor’s degree programs in Interior Design, Graphic Design and Fashion Design, and associate’s degree programs in Culinary Arts and Graphic Design in the Evening and Weekend format.

DALLAS, February 18, 2008] – The 27^th Annual Congressional Art Competition will be held Thursday, February 21 at The Art Institute of Dallas. This competition was established to recognize the creative spirit of American high school students through a nationwide art contest. It provides an excellent opportunity to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talent of high school students.

In the past, more than 200 congressional offices have participated in this program. The winning entries (one from each congressional office) are displayed in a corridor of the U.S. Capitol Building.

The Art Institute of Dallas will host the contest for high school students living in the 32^nd Congressional District, with Congressman Pete Sessions acting as master of ceremonies.

The winner will receive a $200 savings bond, three roundtrip airline tickets to Washington, D.C., and their work will be displayed in the

Capitol Building. The Art Institute of Dallas is also offering a $2500 tuition scholarship to the local winner.

Art Institute of Dallas Sweeps Video Race

(Dallas – July 28, 2008) The Art Institute of Dallas entered three teams into the second annual 48-Hour Film Project race in

Dallas, and won a majority of the awards. “Spin Cycle” won Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Use of Props, and Best Graphics! As Best Film, “Spin Cycle” will be screened at Filmapalooza, the official 48HFP Awards Weekend, held in the past at SXSW in Austin and Cinequest in

San Jose. A selection of the City-Winning films will receive distribution on DVD, and the film is eligible for the Fall Shootout and HD Showdown. The film was produced by BTF, made up of students

Joaquin Chacon, Israel Isas, Nina Alcantar, Jonathan Reyes, and Jeremy Medranowon.

“Speechless” won Best Directing, Best Musical Score. Hon Mention Best Graphics, and one of the Audience Awards. The film was produced by Reel Ninjas, composed of faculty team leader Vince Williams and students Amanda Bourland, Brent Burden, Kelly Luu, Kevin Luu, Sonya Garza, Tony Dresser, Kristen Gonzales, Steven Johnson, Tyler Piersall, Abigail Cope, and Chris Myers. “Living with M.A.D.” won Best Choreography, Best Actor (Paul Taylor), and Hon Mention Musical Score. The film was produced by Barking Cicadas, consisting of faculty team leader Anne Perry and members Tim Perry, Ryan Fyffe, Tomi Hutton, Leslie Gaddis, Jason Clemente, Shawn Jones, Chris Phillips, Carlos (C.J.) The Art Institute of Dallas Announces New Kitchen & Bath Design Program

DALLAS – February 13, 2008) The Art Institute of Dallas is proud to announce a new Associate of Applied Arts program as of January, 2008 — Kitchen & Bath Design.

The Kitchen & Bath Design associate’s program will prepare students for entry-level positions with a focused specialization in these two important areas of the home. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to participate in the design, sales, and installation of kitchen and bath projects.

Students will study computer-aided drafting in order to plan kitchen and bath spaces in a residential setting. They will learn about lighting, materials, budgets, estimates, building systems, and codes, along with products and appliances. They will also gain skills in business fundamentals such as project bidding, plus an introduction to public relations, marketing, and promotions.

“The Art Institute of Dallas scrutinizes employment trends and expected graduate outcomes through a lengthy evaluation process with both the State Board of Education and our accreditation agency,” says Simon Lumley, President of The Art Institute of Dallas. “We believe an associate’s degree in Kitchen & Bath Design will answer a significant employment need, which has always been the hallmark of each of our degree programs.”

The Kitchen & Bath Design associate’s degree program lasts 7 quarters (approx. 2 academic years) and contains 105 credit hours.

My Wendy’s, My Way Hits Dallas-Fort Worth

Art Institute of Dallas students Andrea Maiella and Will Tran participated in the My Wendy’s, My Way Art Contest on May 7 in

Fort Worth. The contest is part of Wendy’s Great Taste Tour, which stops in 23 cities across the country. In each city, a selected organization will choose a local artist to design their version of Wendy, giving her local flair that is unique to the location. Fort Worth is the first and only stop in

Texas, and Andrea and Will receive $2500 just for entering the contest.

At the end of the tour in December, the entries from across the country will be judged and the winning artist will receive $25,000. The winning organization (in this case, The Art Institute of Dallas) will also receive $25,000 if their artist is chosen.

Andrea and Will worked diligently on their piece from 10 am-2 pm, braving rainy weather and putting the finishing touches on their collaborative design. Wendy’s mobile kitchen served up 1,000 complimentary hamburgers and passed out gift cards and other prizes. Wendy’s Great Taste Tour will continue on to

Kansas City.

The Culinary Circle of Life

DALLAS – June 12, 2008) On Wednesday, June 18, wide-eyed teenagers who yearn for a culinary career will come face to face with their dream of running their own restaurant.

The teens are taking part in The Art Institute of Dallas’s Summer Studio, a week-long series of workshops, providing students and educators the opportunity to stretch their creative muscles and experience the exciting career fields of fashion design, interior design, digital filmmaking, culinary arts, animation, and graphic design.

Each program will take an “industry tour” to see how their passion translates into real life. The young culinary hopefuls will take a tour of The Twisted Root, founded by Art Institute of Dallas graduates Jason Boso and Quincy Hart. They will then enjoy lunch at the restaurant, and will have the opportunity to ask questions of the owners to get a professional perspective of how the restaurateur world really works.

Jason Boso hopes to also show the students his latest venture, Cowboy Chow, which will be opening soon in Deep Ellum. Cowboy Chow offers chef-driven, cast-iron cooking, specializing in Brisket Tacos. Examples are Tequila, Cumin and Tomatillo brisket tacos or Wild Boar tacos with sweet corn and ranchero sauce.

Unleash Your Compassion at the 3rd Annual ART TO THE RESCUE SOIREE

All proceeds benefit Animal Rescue of Texas, a non-profit rescue organization whose mission is to save the lives of homeless animals and to educate the

North Texas community of the humane treatment of companion animals.

Art Institute Team Wins Best of Dallas in 48-Hour Video Race

Tank Collective, a team of students at The Art Institute of Dallas working with faculty member and department chair of the Digital Filmmaking and Video Production program G. Lysa Ausmus, won Best of Dallas with its short film, “Stained,” in the 48-Hour Film Project Video Race held over the July 13-15 weekend.Team participants included director Vince Williams, editor Kaitlin Murphy, actors Amanda Bourland and Richard Buckelew, and Jonathan Reyes, an alumnae of the AiD program.

The award-winning film also garnered awards for best acting, best music, and best graphics. It will be the only film from Dallas to go on to the international competition, and has a chance to win $7500 and a high-definition camera from Panasonic.

Winners were announced on July 28 at an awards event held ten days after all of the films were screened at the Inwood Theatre and judges were given a week to deliberate on their choices.

This is the first time that Dallas has been involved in the multi-city, international competition, according to Lisa Russell, organizer and sponsor of the Dallas race. “At the start of the race, each of the 22 participating teams drew a genre and was given a character, prop, and line of dialogue to include in their film,” explains Russell. “They then had 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit their short film (4 to 7 minutes). It is a formidable challenge.”

G. Lysa Ausmus, leader of the award-winning film team, agrees. “Collaboration is essential, and the race takes courage and determination. The process of adapting to a genre your team draws out of a hat, coming up with a story, writing a script, creating storyboards, directing, shooting, acting, composing music, editing, creating credits—it’s mind-boggling how anyone can finish the race in forty-eight hours.”

But finish they did, with a new incentive to dedicate themselves to their studies and to the various crafts of film and video making. “We are so proud of the team and its achievement, even without the prize,” says Ausmus. “But having the prize gives us confirmation that our program is succeeding in teaching our students the skills they will need in the real world of making films.”

The Art Institute of Dallas Hosts Judging Event for Hispanic Yellow Pages Cover Contest

The Art Institute of Dallas was proud to embrace Latin culture by hosting an art judging event for the Directorio en Español on Thursday, July 12. This was the second year in a row that The Art Institute hosted the judging event.

The judges, comprised of distinguished community members, selected the winning artwork that will grace the cover of the Directorio en Español in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area – the region’s premier Spanish Yellow Pages.

The pieces in the competition were all done by local artists and illustrated how Hispanic Heritage lives in the greater Dallas community.

The winner will be announced on September 6 at the Dupree Theater in the Irving Arts Center. The winner will not only be featured on the cover of the Directorio en Español, but he or she will also receive $3000 in cash, and the winning piece will be on exhibit at the Focus Gallery.
