Tank Collective Winners

Tank Collective, a team of students at The Art Institute of Dallas working with faculty member and department chair of the Digital Filmmaking and Video Production program G. Lysa Ausmus, won Best of Dallas with its short film, “Stained,” in the 48-Hour Film Project Video Race held over the July 13-15 weekend.Team participants included director Vince Williams, editor Kaitlin Murphy, actors Amanda Bourland and Richard Buckelew, and Jonathan Reyes, an alumnae of the AiD program.

The award-winning film also garnered awards for best acting, best music, and best graphics. It will be the only film from Dallas to go on to the international competition, and has a chance to win $7500 and a high-definition camera from Panasonic.

Winners were announced on July 28 at an awards event held ten days after all of the films were screened at the Inwood Theatre and judges were given a week to deliberate on their choices.

This is the first time that Dallas has been involved in the multi-city, international competition, according to Lisa Russell, organizer and sponsor of the Dallas race. “At the start of the race, each of the 22 participating teams drew a genre and was given a character, prop, and line of dialogue to include in their film,” explains Russell. “They then had 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit their short film (4 to 7 minutes). It is a formidable challenge.”

G. Lysa Ausmus, leader of the award-winning film team, agrees. “Collaboration is essential, and the race takes courage and determination. The process of adapting to a genre your team draws out of a hat, coming up with a story, writing a script, creating storyboards, directing, shooting, acting, composing music, editing, creating credits—it’s mind-boggling how anyone can finish the race in forty-eight hours.”

But finish they did, with a new incentive to dedicate themselves to their studies and to the various crafts of film and video making. “We are so proud of the team and its achievement, even without the prize,” says Ausmus. “But having the prize gives us confirmation that our program is succeeding in teaching our students the skills they will need in the real world of making films.”

The winning film can be seen at www.tankcollective.com.

Two New Fashion Programs Dress Up The Art Institute of Dallas

Posted on June 19th, 2007 in Press Releases by AiDallas

The Art Institute of Dallas is proud to announce two new Bachelor of Fine Arts programs to start in October, 2007— Fashion Design and Fashion and Retail Management.

The Art Institute of Dallas already offers an Associate’s Degree in Fashion Design, but the Bachelor-level education will take the courses to a new level, delving deeper into projects and allowing more time for internships and externships.

The Fashion & Retail Management program at The Art Institute of Dallas will offer Bachelor- level education across disciplines in business, fashion, and design. This cross-functional focus will allow students to expand beyond traditional fashion design positions and choose among opportunities in manufacturing, retail management, buying and merchandising, fashion publicity, and even business ownership.

Graduates will begin their careers with a combination of current design knowledge and business judgment that will prepare them for successful futures in fashion and retail management. Our graduates will be able to effectively work in entry-level positions with fashion designers, in retail and manufacturing markets, presenting themselves with knowledge, confidence, and, of course, creativity. This program also includes Internet and international components that respond to the rapidly changing world of retail.

“The Art Institute of Dallas scrutinizes employment trends and expected graduate outcomes through a lengthy evaluation process with both the State Board of Education and our accreditation agency,” says Simon Lumley, President of The Art Institute of Dallas. “We believe these bachelor’s degrees in Fashion Design and Fashion and Retail Management will answer a significant employment need, which has always been the hallmark of each of our degree programs.”

The two fashion bachelor degree programs last 12 quarters (3 academic years) each, and contain 190 credit hours.

The Cat’s Meow

Posted on April 11th, 2007 in Press Releases by AiDallas

Ms. Widget is one lucky cat. She is the office cat and official mascot of the Dallas Wind Symphony (DWS). It is because of Ms. Widget that the design students of the Art Institute of Dallas, The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Dallas Design Community, and the Dallas Wind Symphony have come together for a unique collaboration. In fact, the ASID has chosen the Dallas Wind Symphony – the nation’s only professional concert band — for its community project this year.

The ASID Dallas Design Community is performing an “Office Makeover” to enhance and improve the existing office space for the DWS at historic Fair Park. A team of Interior Designers is offering their design services and ASID Industry Partners are providing new carpeting, office furniture, ceiling fans, window treatments, paint, etc. While reviewing the office needs, it became apparent that Ms. Widget needed a makeover of her own, so the Dallas Design Community came up with the idea of creating a house especially for the cat.
This idea was brought to the attention of The Art Institute of Dallas, who has a long-standing relationship with ASID, and a competition began to create a new home for Ms. Widget – “The Best Little Cat House in Texas.” Eight groups of Interior Design students from instructor Michael Brady’s Furniture Design class participated as part of their final exam project, and all of the houses will be displayed at the Meyerson Symphony Center lobby during the Dallas Wind Symphony’s April 17 concert. In thanks and as guests of the DWS, the students who participated will be in attendance and recognized at the concert.
The cat houses are currently being rotated throughout the DWS office so that Ms. Widget can sample each one and choose her favorite. It’s truly the cat’s meow.
Tickets are available for the April 17th concert by calling the DWS Box Office at 214-528-5576. The concert begins at 8:00 PM.

Rockwall, TX senior wins local Best Teen Chef Competition

Posted on March 19th, 2007 in Press Releases by AiDallas

Rockwall high school senior Lara Pullin kept her cool in a hot kitchen and won the $10,000 first prize in the local Best Teen Chef Competition, held on March 17 in the Culinary Building of The Art Institute of Dallas. Lara will move on to the national competition, also being held at The Art Institute of Dallas, on May 5!

The second place winner was Plano East senior Ashley Riehs, and Taylor Kearney of Caddo Mills came in third.

Students prepared a menu of shrimp cocktail, sautéed chicken breast, fresh broccoli and rice pilaf. They had 90 minutes to prepare their dishes, and were judged on taste, cleanliness, and mise en place (organization, taste and presentation).

According to judge (and past local winner) Rachel Fraizer, “We had an exceptional group of competitors here today – they all did extremely well, but we can only send one to nationals, and Lara showed that she had the talent and focus to succeed in the national event.”

Lara will join 22 other high school seniors that will travel on to Dallas. In all, The Art Institutes will award over $250,000 in tuition scholarships.
