Security on Campus

Students, Staff and Faculty:

You may have heard about the tragic incident Monday morning at Virginia Tech in which students were killed. We offer our condolences to the families, classmates and the entire Virginia Tech community.

Incidents like this remind us of the importance of safety and security, the need to be prepared for unexpected situations, and the reason for policies and procedures designed for our mutual wellbeing. At The Art Institute of Dallas those policies and procedures are regularly reviewed and updated. We address issues such as emergency and crisis response, behavior within our facilities, access to college facilities, and law enforcement including relationships with local and state police.

Our campus is located in a developing and vibrant area of Dallas. Though we live in a close community, it is important to remember that we are in the middle of a major city and it is always wise to keep safety at the top of our minds. Maintaining a safe environment is everyone’s responsibility.

Remember to take the following precautions at all times:

  • Be alert and use reasonable caution when walking through neighborhoods near the college.
  • Do not walk alone, especially at night. Walk in pairs or groups.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings as you walk.
  • Avoid dark areas – stay on well-lit and well-traveled streets.
  • If something or someone makes you feel uneasy near the school, including any overly aggressive solicitations, please alert college security or call 911.
  • If you park on campus and are uneasy about returning to your car in the dark, ask the security guard to accompany you.
  • If an emergency should happen while you are on campus, please do not hesitate to call 911.

Over the past year we have expanded security cameras within and outside of our building and instituted policies that limit access to the building. We continue to review security and safety actions and we encourage everyone to join us in enforcing existing plans while remaining vigilant about safety:

  • Always wear the ID badge issued to you by The Art Institute of Dallas
  • Do not let anyone follow you when you enter the outside security doors, or open a side/rear door as a “short-cut” to someone using the appropriate front and skyway entrances.
  • Report any suspicious or unusual activity immediately to the reception desk on the first floor or to the Security Office on the 3rd floor near the skyway.

Here are some phone numbers to know in the event of an emergency:

  • Police Emergency: 911
  • The Art Institute Dallas - Main Phone Number: 214-692-8080
  • The Art Institute Dallas - Front Desk direct number: 469-587-1206
  • Security Officer Cell phone : 214-684-2825
  • Dean of Student Affairs direct number: 469-587-1409
  • Dean of Academic Affairs direct number: 469-587-1174
  • School Counseling Office: 469-587-1223

We all want to work and study in a safe and secure environment, and together we will achieve and sustain that desired environment for this college.

Sincerely,

Simon J. Lumley
President
