Budding Teen Chefs Try Out For A Spot in National Culinary Competition

Kitchens are heating up as high school seniors with big culinary ambitions prepare to compete in The Art Institutes Best Teen Chef Culinary Scholarship Competition.

On Saturday, March 12 high school seniors will vie for a slot in the national event, held in Philadelphia, where the Best Teen Chef will be named. The regional event will begin at 9 a.m. in the Charles J. Boley Culinary Arts building at The Art Institute of Dallas located at 8080 Park Lane in Dallas, Texas. Semi-finalists include the following high school students from the region:

Drew Murrell of Burleson, Texas attending Burleson High School;
Tabitha Steele of Pittsburg, Texas attending Pittsburg High School;
Tara Mills of Wichita Falls, Texas attending City View Junior Senior High School;
Tara Springer of San Angelo, Texas attending Central High School;
Krysten Heinen of Seneca, Kansas attending Nemana Valley High School;
Somalia Timmons of Greenville, Texas attending Greenville High School;
Anthony Moore of Wylie, Texas attending Wylie High School;
Donald Lynn Conklin of Paris, Texas attending Paris High School;and
Glenn Lewis of Terrell, Texas attending Forney High School

A nationwide contest for high school seniors, the Best Teen Chef Culinary Scholarship Competition offers full-tuition scholarships worth at least $30,000 to winning students, and the opportunity to study culinary arts at The Art Institute of their choice.

The local competitions begin with a continental breakfast reception at 9 a.m. and wrap up with a formal awards ceremony at the end of the day. With the assistance of a student helper (from the culinary school), semi-finalists will prepare a menu issued, in advance, by The Art Institutes. A panel of professional judges and chef instructors, including at least one American Culinary Federation Certified Master Chef. All finalists with one guest will be flown on Friday, May 13 to the competition location in Philadelphia. For the event, contestants will prepare a menu issued in advance, by The Art Institutes.

Now in its sixth year, The Art Institutes Best Teen Chef Culinary Scholarship Competition is offering students, and their families, an unprecedented opportunity to jump-start an education in culinary arts.
